FOR FIREARMS ENTHUSIASTS, STUDENTS OF RENAISSANCE WARFARE, OR SIMPLY THOSE WHO APPRECIATE A WONDERFULLY ILLUSTRATED BOOK
BROOKER (R.). R.DITTRICH & L.TOIFI. WHEELLOCK FIREARMS IN THE COLLECTION OF THE LANDESZEUGHAUS GRAZ.

In English & German, 736pp., large 4to, 2000+ colour photos. 2007. Anyone who has visited the Landeszeughaus will know the huge significance of the collection. The sheer number of guns is massive, most of them somewhat difficult to see. At last we have an authoritative study that thoroughly does the collection justice. Quite simply this book is superb. It is also 3.5 kilos! It begins with a fascinating study of the formation of the collection and the importance of Styria from a military point-of-view. There then follows a brief study of the development of the wheellock. The main body of the book then provides a detailed classification of wheellock types in the collection, all superbly illustrated with excellent colour photographs. The scholarship of the cataloguing is simply wonderful and the chance to look in detail at what must be the finest single collection of wheellocks is an absolute joy. This is the sort of book one will never tire of, but dip back into frequently
