A HELLISH BUSINESS: THE HORRORS OF WAR COUPLED WITH THE COMPLEXITIES OF THE 'PURCHASE' AND 'STAFF APPOINTMENT' SYSTEMS: FROM THE LETTERS OF CAPTAIN CHARLES KINLOCH 52ND FOOT 1806-16. 310pp., 5 colour & 26 b/w illus. 2007. Charles Kinloch was commissioned as an ensign in the 52nd Foot on 5 January 1806. He served at Copenhagen, at Walcheren, and then in Spain for the campaigns of 1810-12. He was wounded in the carnage of the breach at the final assault on Badajoz. Recovering at home Kinloch worked tirelessly to gain a captaincy, which he eventually did, in the 99th Foot. However he transferred back to the 52nd, served as a Aide to Sir John Hope & witnessed his wounding at Bayonne. Charles missed Waterloo but joined his regiment in Paris after the battle. ~
